Cyber Police Issues Fraud Warnings for Online Vehicle Sales

The rise of online vehicle transactions has become a practical and attractive option for many, allowing users to find everything from the latest models to collectible cars at accessible prices. However, this convenience also attracts cybercriminals who exploit online platforms to deceive and scam users.

To combat these crimes, Cyber Police and the Citizen Security Secretariat have shared essential recommendations to protect buyers in their online vehicle transactions. Scams in the automotive sector often follow specific patterns, luring users with too-good-to-be-true offers.

A common tactic includes posting eye-catching photos and surprisingly low prices. Once a buyer shows interest, scammers send additional images of the vehicle to build trust and propose interest-free payment methods. The next step often involves requesting a deposit for 'administrative procedures' like registration changes.

After receiving the payment, criminals may arrange a meeting to 'show' the vehicle but often do not show up, disappearing with the money. In some cases, buyers are pressured to transfer the full amount before seeing the vehicle, using excuses like bank issues to avoid delivering the car.

To mitigate fraud risks, the Cyber Police and SSC recommend several precautions. If you have already fallen victim to online fraud, the Cyber Police offer support in investigating and tracking these cases. You can contact them at 55 5242 5100, extension 5086, or via email at policia.cibernetica@ssc.cdmx.gob.mx. It’s advisable to file a detailed report, attaching evidence such as photos, screenshots, audio, and video.

The increase in online transactions brings many advantages, but it is crucial to take precautions to avoid falling victim to scams that can severely impact buyers' finances.
