Worldcoin Expands Amid Concerns in Mexico

Worldcoin, operated by Tools for Humanity, has launched new World ID services in Puebla, Mexico, expanding its presence in Latin America. With four centers now in operation, the initiative aims to verify the identity of users aged 18 and over, ensuring that only 'unique human beings' receive World IDs. However, security experts are raising alarms over the project, citing regulatory challenges and potential misuse of biometric data.

Experts like Carlos Tlahuel from the National Autonomous University of Mexico have urged citizens to be cautious about sharing personal data, questioning the necessity of providing biometric information to access services. Concerns are particularly pronounced in regions where legal protections are minimal, and the potential for exploitation exists.

Despite these warnings, Worldcoin is pushing forward, recently announcing its expansion into Guatemala. Critics suggest that the project has strategically targeted Latin America due to the regulatory complexities faced in more developed regions like the US and EU, where data protection laws are stringent.

Worldcoin has attempted to address privacy concerns by implementing ID verification measures aimed at preventing the collection of biometric data from minors. Nevertheless, skepticism remains, particularly regarding the transparency of how personal data is processed.
