AI Drives Surge in Cybercrime as Ransomware Attacks Reach Record Highs

In 2023, Spain experienced a record 83,517 cybersecurity incidents, a 24% increase from the previous year, according to the National Cybersecurity Institute (Incibe). Over 58,000 of these incidents targeted citizens, while more than 22,000 affected private companies and freelancers.

The rise in cybercrime is highlighted by a 509.1% increase in online scams since 2016, with 211,294 fraud cases reported in the first half of 2023 alone. High-profile targets included major companies like Banco Santander and Iberdrola, as well as public institutions and NATO sectors.

Experts warn that ransomware, particularly through phishing attacks, is becoming more sophisticated, aided by artificial intelligence (AI). AI helps cybercriminals identify vulnerabilities and execute complex attacks, while also providing tools for cybersecurity defenses.

Incibe is already utilizing AI to detect patterns for early alerts and automate incident management. Despite the challenges, experts believe Spain is making progress in cybersecurity but emphasize the need for ongoing vigilance.

To combat these threats, Incibe recommends strong, unique passwords, regular device updates, and cautious handling of links and attachments. For businesses, establishing clear security policies and regular employee training are crucial.
