ANI Sues OpenAI Over Copyright Infringement in New Delhi Court

Indian news agency ANI has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in a New Delhi court, claiming the company used its published content without permission to train the ChatGPT AI model. This lawsuit adds to a series of similar legal actions against OpenAI by various news organizations worldwide.

The first hearing occurred on November 19, where the Delhi High Court issued a notice to OpenAI, requiring a detailed response to ANI's allegations. ANI accused OpenAI of reproducing its content and fabricating news stories attributed to the agency.

OpenAI responded, asserting that it builds its AI models using publicly available data under fair use principles. The company has previously faced lawsuits from authors and other copyright holders for similar claims.

ANI contends that OpenAI has not sought lawful licensing for its content, despite entering licensing agreements with other organizations. The court will reconvene to hear the case on January 28, 2024.
