The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and IBM have introduced two new interactive AI models aimed at enhancing clean energy access and equity. These models, developed under the IBM Sustainability Accelerator program, utilize IBM's watsonx and cloud technologies.
The AI model, Electricity Access Forecasting, predicts electricity access trends through 2030 by analyzing various factors like population, infrastructure, and satellite data. It is designed to provide insights for 102 countries, particularly in the Global South.
Additionally, the Clean Energy Equity Index combines geospatial analysis with environmental, economic, and social factors to assess clean energy opportunities and needs for equitable transitions. This model will include data from 53 African countries.
Both models will be freely accessible via the UNDP's GeoHub platform, empowering users from policymakers to the general public with vital data to address complex energy challenges.
“By combining UNDP's expertise in sustainable development with IBM's AI innovation, we aim to create solutions that positively impact our communities and environment,” said Justina Nixon-Saintil, IBM's Chief Impact Officer.
