China Plans to Deploy Killer Robots in Two Years Amid Rapid AI Advancements

China is reportedly preparing to deploy killer robots within the next two years, following the unveiling of robotic dogs armed with automatic weapons. Defense analyst Francis Tusa highlighted China's rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and military technology, noting that the country is progressing at a pace four to five times faster than the United States.

Tusa emphasized the prestige associated with developing fully autonomous combat aircraft, predicting that autonomous machines from China could emerge soon. Meanwhile, the UK Ministry of Defence is investing millions in AI-based weapon systems but clarified that it does not possess or intend to develop fully autonomous weapons.

In June, Chinese company Unitree Robotics showcased a robotic dog during military exercises with Cambodia, designed to assist in urban combat operations by conducting reconnaissance and targeting enemies. A video from the exercises displayed the robot's capabilities, indicating a significant level of technical maturity.

The use of robotic dogs and drones in military operations is not new, with the U.S. Air Force previously demonstrating their integration into advanced combat management systems. Similarly, Russian military exercises have featured armed robotic dogs.

This year, China has undergone a major restructuring of its armed forces, focusing on technology-driven strategic forces for modern warfare, amid ongoing competition with Washington for military dominance in the region. President Xi Jinping has emphasized the importance of AI and new technologies in preparing for what is termed 'intelligent warfare.'

The establishment of the Information Support Forces, a new branch of the military, underscores the significance of information dominance in modern warfare, with experts suggesting it will enhance Xi's control over strategic military capabilities.

The concept of 'intelligent warfare' has gained attention, particularly in China's 2019 defense white paper, which noted the military applications of cutting-edge technologies. The emphasis on information warfare and intelligent combat strategies carries significant implications for potential conflicts, particularly in the Taiwan Strait.
