JWST Detects Hot Material Around Forming Planets in PDS 70 System, Hints at Third Planet

Düzenleyen: Uliana S. Аj

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has achieved unprecedented resolution using Near Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (NIRISS) and Aperture Masking Interferometry, revealing new details about the PDS 70 system.

Observations at longer wavelengths detected more light than expected, indicating the presence of hot material around the forming planets PDS 70 b and PDS 70 c. This supports theories of planetary formation.

Data suggest the possible existence of a third planet, provisionally named PDS 70d, with a distinct atmospheric composition. Scientists are analyzing the data to confirm its presence and determine the nature of the detected emissions.

The PDS 70 system offers a unique opportunity to study multiple planet formation simultaneously, providing insights into the processes that shaped our own solar system.
