Oman to Launch First Experimental Rocket from New Spaceport in Duqm

Oman, under the supervision of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, is set to launch its first experimental scientific rocket named Duqm-1. This initiative is part of a strategic partnership with NASCOM's subsidiary, Launch Company, which has secured a land lease for the spaceport's construction in the Duqm region.

Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, Engineer Said bin Hamoud Al Maawali, stated that this project aligns with the ministry's strategic initiatives aimed at leveraging Oman's geographic advantages to foster space science and technology, attract investments, and create job opportunities in the sector.

Dr. Ali bin Amer Al Shaidhani, Undersecretary for Communications and Information Technology, noted Oman's favorable location near the equator, which reduces costs and time for launching spacecraft into various orbits.

The launch of the Duqm-1 rocket is scheduled for December 4, 2024, from a site designated at 18°N, 56°E. The rocket, measuring 6.5 meters in length and weighing 80 kg empty (123 kg with fuel), is expected to reach an altitude of 140 km at a speed of 1530 m/s over approximately 15 minutes.

Due to security precautions, the launch will not be open to the public, and attendance will be limited. The ministry has advised the public to avoid the launch area on December 4 from 8 AM to 12 PM.
