On December 5, 2024, Anchorage, Alaska, experienced significant freezing rain, resulting in hazardous road conditions and the closure of schools. The Anchorage School District announced a shift to remote learning due to the deteriorating conditions, with only Girdwood K-8 conducting in-person classes without bus service.

The city’s public transportation service, People Mover, suspended operations in response to the hazardous weather. A winter weather advisory from the National Weather Service remains in effect until 3 p.m. Thursday, warning of a light glaze forming on roads.

Forecasters indicated that the most intense freezing rain would occur during the morning hours, with temperatures expected to rise above freezing later in the day, transitioning precipitation to rain. Areas with residual snow cover are predicted to face the greatest impact from the freezing rain.

Additionally, parts of the Kenai Peninsula are under a special weather statement due to similar freezing rain conditions affecting major highways.
