Severe Flooding Hits France and Italy - October 27, 2024

Heavy rainfall on October 27, 2024, has resulted in severe flooding across southern France and northern Italy, disrupting transportation and prompting rescue operations.

The Var department in southeastern France has been particularly affected, with the famous resort town of Saint-Tropez experiencing significant inundation of shops and restaurants. Rescue efforts have involved helicopters in various parts of the department.

Many roads remain closed due to the weather conditions, and rail services have been interrupted following a train derailment caused by a landslide on a regional line.

In northern Italy, especially in Tuscany, several roads and homes are underwater after days of heavy rainfall, with rivers overflowing their banks. Rescue teams near Pisa assisted over ten drivers who were stranded on their vehicle roofs.

Authorities in Piedmont, Liguria, and Emilia-Romagna have warned residents to exercise caution due to adverse weather conditions expected to persist through the weekend. In Turin, officials have advised residents to stay indoors and avoid driving and hiking.

Two individuals are reported missing in Italy due to the flooding. One disappeared in the mountains near Genoa, while the other went missing in rural areas near Nuxis in Sardinia.

This flooding follows prior incidents last week, where severe weather in Bologna resulted in one fatality.
