On February 3, 2025, Colombian Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, Susana Muhamad, emphasized the urgent need to protect the country's wetlands during the World Wetlands Day celebration. With over 48,000 wetlands, of which 12 are designated Ramsar sites, Colombia's ecosystems are crucial in combating climate change by acting as carbon sinks and supporting diverse amphibious communities.

Minister Muhamad highlighted the ongoing conservation and restoration initiatives, particularly in La Mojana, a region housing one of the country's largest wetlands. A restoration project in this area, backed by a significant investment, aims to enhance the ecological balance and promote sustainable use of these vital ecosystems.

Meanwhile, in Argentina, the Municipal Natural Reserves El Pindó and Jardín Florido have been officially added to the Ramsar site Jaaukanigás. This addition, announced on the same day, expands the protected wetland area by over 1,100 hectares, underscoring the country’s commitment to biodiversity and environmental balance.

Both nations recognize the critical role wetlands play not only in ecological health but also in supporting local economies through ecotourism and education. As climate change continues to threaten these habitats, the call for global action in wetland conservation has never been more pressing.
