From January 28 to 31, 2025, Costa Rica solidified its leadership in the ornamental plant sector by participating in the prestigious IPM Essen fair in Germany. This event, which attracted over 36,000 visitors from 43 countries, serves as a vital platform for showcasing the diversity and quality of Costa Rican flora.
Organized by the Promotora del Comercio Exterior de Costa Rica (PROCOMER), a delegation of 11 companies aimed to explore business opportunities not only in traditional European markets but also in emerging ones like the Middle East. By the end of November 2024, Costa Rican ornamental plant exports surpassed $80 million, with key destinations including the United States, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany.
Mario Sáenz, the Export Development Manager at PROCOMER, emphasized the importance of this fair, stating, "Our participation in IPM Essen has been crucial for the internationalization of the ornamental plant sector. This event is vital for consolidating our presence in Europe, the second most important market for our exports, and exploring new horizons in high-income markets like the Middle East."
The Costa Rican stand featured a range of products, including various species of ficus, alocasias, zamioculcas, and Phalaenopsis orchids, all recognized for their exceptional quality and sustainable practices. Agro Orchids, a first-time participant at the fair, highlighted the opportunity to connect with potential clients and expand their international market presence.
During the fair, Costa Rican companies had the chance to meet with major international buyers and analyze the latest global market trends, including new varieties and sustainability demands.
