Conservation Alert: 24 Raptors Killed in Spain

In a troubling incident in La Roda, Spain, authorities have investigated a local man for the alleged illegal killing of 24 raptors, including endangered and vulnerable species. The investigation was carried out by the Seprona unit of the Civil Guard in Albacete.

Among the species found were:

  • One Iberian imperial eagle

  • One booted eagle

  • Six Montagu's harriers

  • Five marsh harriers

  • Nine common buzzards

  • One black kite

  • One sparrowhawk

The incident came to light in August 2023 when a Montagu's harrier, classified as vulnerable, was tracked via its GPS device after being shot. This led to the discovery of the other dead raptors in a cornfield near two hunting reserves.

Investigators concluded that at least 20 of the birds were killed by shotgun fire, primarily in areas designated for hunting. The suspect reportedly believed that these birds harmed small game species.

This significant loss of wildlife has raised alarms about the ecological balance in the region, particularly within the Important Bird Area 459, which is crucial for bird conservation.

All 24 species are listed in the Regional Catalog of Threatened Species of Castilla-La Mancha, with one species endangered, twelve vulnerable, and eleven of special concern. The estimated ecological value of the lost wildlife is around 189,000 euros.

The case has been referred to the local court, with potential penalties including imprisonment, fines, and a two-year hunting ban.

Authorities urge the public to report any injured wildlife immediately to the Civil Guard, emphasizing the importance of not handling the animals to avoid further harm.
