Taiwan Lantern Festival 2025 Opens in Taoyuan, Blending Tradition with Sustainability and Baseball Spirit

The Taiwan Lantern Festival 2025 officially commenced in Taoyuan on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, promising 13 days of dazzling displays and cultural experiences until February 25. The festival was inaugurated by President Lai Ching-Te, who symbolically hit a "home run," celebrating Taiwan's baseball prowess. Joined by prominent figures including Premier Cho Jung-Tai, Minister of Transportation and Tourism Chen Shih-kai, and Taoyuan Mayor Chan San-Cheng, the President illuminated the main lantern, themed "Infinity Paradise." President Lai Ching-Te noted this marks his first participation in the Taiwan Lantern Festival since assuming office. This year's festival is centered in Taoyuan, a city renowned as a hub for both baseball culture and international transportation. Coinciding with the 36th year of the Lantern Festival, it also celebrates the 36th anniversary of the Professional Baseball League. Premier Cho Jung-Tae highlighted the Lantern Festival as a significant cultural event, akin to a "mini-New Year," with hopes of boosting tourism from both domestic and international visitors. Lin, during a press briefing in Taoyuan, described the event as a "Disneyland without roller coasters," emphasizing the unique and engaging experience it offers. Elaborating on the "Infinity Paradise" theme, Lin explained its significance for the Year of the Snake: "This year is special because it's the Year of the Snake. The symbol we launched is the infinity symbol, which resembles a snake, hence we call it Infinity Paradise." The lanterns incorporate recycled materials, reflecting a commitment to sustainable tourism. Visitors can expect interactive experiences, including lanterns with photobooths, adding to the entertainment. Heaven, a Taoyuan resident, expressed her joy at the festival, stating, "I can introduce Chinese culture to my children." She attended with her wife and three children. Beyond Taoyuan, the Lantern Festival extends to over 20 cities across Taiwan, funded by donations from various companies and the Taiwanese government.
