Greece and Saudi Arabia Forge Stronger Ties Through Strategic Cooperation Council

The recent visit of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to Al Ula marks a significant step in strengthening the strategic ties between Greece and Saudi Arabia. This visit coincided with the inaugural meeting of the Supreme Cooperation Council, amidst evolving geopolitical dynamics in the Middle East.

During the first session of the Greece-Saudi Arabia Strategic Cooperation Council, both countries agreed to enhance their relations through collaboration in energy, trade, and investment, structured around seven key pillars.

The meeting highlighted the importance of coordination and cooperation across various sectors to bolster mutual interests and achieve stability. The agreement to establish the Strategic Cooperation Council was signed in Athens on July 26, 2022, and the first session took place in Al Ula on January 13, 2025.

Co-chaired by Prime Minister Mitsotakis and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the session emphasized the necessity of activating the Council and its committees as a platform for advancing bilateral relations.

Among the key initiatives discussed were:

  • Strengthening defense and security cooperation through a long-term military partnership.

  • Enhancing trade and investment relations, with a focus on boosting non-oil exports.

  • Promoting tourism between the two nations through a Joint Action Program for 2024-2026 aimed at increasing tourist demand.

  • Fostering cultural exchanges to deepen mutual understanding.

Furthermore, a virtual meeting of the Sports Committee was held, where collaboration in sports infrastructure and anti-doping initiatives was discussed.

As the two nations prepare for their next meeting in Athens, the commitment to intensifying consultations and cooperation across various sectors remains strong, aiming to fulfill the aspirations of both countries.
