BT Group to Expand Electric Vehicle Fleet to 8,000 Units, Leading UK Transition to Greener Transport

BT Group, a major British telecom provider, announced plans to increase its electric vehicle (EV) fleet by 3,500 units over the next two years, bringing its total EV count to 8,000. This move positions BT Group as the owner of the largest electric vehicle fleet in the UK.

The company currently operates a total fleet of over 27,000 vehicles, both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric. BT Group aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2031 and plans to electrify nearly all of its vehicles within the next five years.

Executives at BT Group believe the new EVs, which will include models from Ford, Stellantis, Toyota, and Renault, will enhance their operations as they work to upgrade UK residents to full fiber internet access. CFO Simon Lowth stated, "By integrating yet more electric vehicles into our operations, we are taking another significant step towards reducing our carbon footprint and supporting the UK's transition to a greener future."

In addition to its internal goals, BT Group supports the UK government's proposed 2030 ban on ICE vehicles. Lilian Greenwood, Future of Roads Minister, praised the company’s efforts, noting the extension of a £120 million plug-in van grant aimed at increasing the number of zero-emission vans on UK roads.

The commercial EV market is expected to continue its rapid expansion, driven by strong incentives and cost parity with traditional vehicles, as well as reductions in maintenance costs.
