Iraq and US Discuss Security Relations Amid Regional Tensions

On January 30, 2025, Iraqi Foreign Minister announced ongoing discussions with the United States regarding its presence in Iraq and the development of bilateral relations. He emphasized the Iraqi government's commitment to ensuring that security and military decisions remain under its control, rather than in the hands of armed factions. Negotiations are continuing with these factions to facilitate the surrender of their weapons.

The Foreign Minister noted that stability in Syria directly impacts Iraqi security, warning of the presence of 10,000 to 12,000 ISIS militants in the custody of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), who could pose a security threat to Iraq if released. This situation necessitates enhanced international cooperation to combat the organization along the shared border.

Regarding regional relations, the Foreign Minister highlighted discussions with his Turkish counterpart that focused on the situation in Syria and the threats posed by ISIS. He also mentioned ongoing communication with the Syrian Foreign Minister, despite the absence of an official visit to Damascus at this time.

Furthermore, he revealed that the Iraqi Prime Minister has directed the head of intelligence to visit Damascus to strengthen security cooperation, while also considering a visit by the Foreign Minister to Syria as part of serious steps to enhance bilateral relations.
