Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty Launched with 82 Countries' Support

On November 18, 2024, the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty was officially launched, marking the beginning of its implementation phase. The initiative, spearheaded by Brazil's Minister of Development and Social Assistance, Wellington Dias, aims to combat food insecurity and poverty worldwide.

The alliance has garnered support from 82 countries, 24 international organizations, nine financial institutions, and 34 philanthropic and non-governmental organizations. Plans include establishing offices in strategic cities such as Washington, D.C.; Rome; Addis Ababa; and Brasília, with a potential base in Bangkok to enhance its presence in Asia.

Participating countries will develop tailored plans to address food insecurity and poverty, utilizing proven measures such as cash transfers and school feeding programs. The initial goal is to reach 500 million people through cash assistance, provide school meals to 150 million children, and support health initiatives for 200 million women and children by 2030.

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that between 713 million and 757 million people faced hunger in 2023, highlighting the urgent need for such initiatives.

The alliance will operate through a technical support structure and a Champions Council, comprising influential leaders from member countries and organizations. This council aims to facilitate partnerships and mobilize additional support.

Brazil is committed to funding 50% of the governance costs of the alliance, with additional financial contributions expected from various countries and organizations. The Inter-American Development Bank has already pledged $25 billion in financing, equivalent to approximately R$ 140 billion.

The G20 summit, taking place in Rio de Janeiro on November 19-20, serves as a significant platform for the alliance's launch, emphasizing the importance of addressing hunger and poverty on a global scale.
