Kenya Advocates for Economic Zones in Africa

NAIROBI, Nov. 28 — Kenyan President William Ruto urged African nations to integrate special economic zones (SEZs) into a continental transformation strategy during the ninth African Economic Zones Organization's annual meeting in Nairobi.

Ruto emphasized that SEZs are crucial for attracting investment, creating jobs, and fostering technological advancements, which are essential for a competitive economy. He called for collaboration among African countries to enhance the role of SEZs as catalysts for economic growth.

He stated, "Special economic zones are indispensable engines of growth," highlighting Kenya's commitment to advancing partnerships in Africa's SEZs, aligning with the vision of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Ruto described AfCFTA as a historic opportunity to create a tariff-free Africa, boost intra-African trade, and generate employment.

Ruto stressed the importance of reducing dependence on external support and building a self-reliant, pan-African economic area. He noted the need to transition from raw material production to competitive export production through industrialization.

The meeting, organized by the African Union, began on Nov. 27 and will continue for three days, focusing on the theme "Building Resilient, Inclusive and Sustainable Economies: The Role of African SEZs in Attracting Impactful Investments and Redefining Competitiveness." Over 300 participants, including policymakers and UN officials, are attending the event at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre.
