EU Allocates €20 Billion for AI Development; Global Leaders Discuss Ethical AI at Paris Summit

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen pledged an additional €20 billion from the EU budget for artificial intelligence (AI) development in Europe. The funds will support the creation of four "Giga-Factories" to train AI models with large datasets, aiming to provide European startups with access to AI chips and computing power.

The "AI Action Summit" in Paris saw differing views on AI regulation. US Vice President J.D. Vance cautioned against strict regulations, arguing it could stifle a promising technology. He also criticized authoritarian regimes for using AI for espionage, specifically mentioning China.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the need to ensure AI benefits developing countries, noting the current concentration of AI power in a few hands could exacerbate geopolitical divisions. The summit concluded with 60 states and organizations endorsing ethical AI development, emphasizing openness, inclusivity, and sustainability. The USA and Great Britain did not join.
