On January 30, 2025, El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele announced the submission of an Anti-Corruption Law proposal to the Legislative Assembly. The proposal aims to enhance transparency and impose stricter penalties for corruption-related crimes.
President Bukele emphasized on social media that the Anti-Corruption Law represents a decisive step in the fight against corruption in the Central American nation, similar to his previous actions against gangs.
The law mandates public officials and their families to submit an annual asset declaration, which will be publicly accessible. It also proposes harsher penalties for corruption offenses and introduces a new crime category targeting the use of front men.
Additionally, the legislation seeks to establish an Anti-Corruption Center with advanced technology to assist the Attorney General's office in detecting suspicious activities through real-time access to public databases.
To encourage citizen participation, the proposal includes the creation of anti-corruption reporting channels. President Bukele described the initiative as the beginning of a firm commitment to eradicate corruption, akin to his previous efforts against gangs and other crimes.
In June 2023, Bukele announced a 'full-frontal war' against corruption and indicated plans to construct a prison specifically for corrupt individuals.
