Deadly Earthquake Strikes Tibet, Tremors Felt in Nepal's Capital Kathmandu

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale struck the Dingri County region of Tibet on January 7, 2025, resulting in at least nine fatalities and significant structural damage. The quake occurred at 9:05 AM local time (01:05 GMT) at a depth of 10 kilometers, as reported by China's state broadcaster CCTV.

The epicenter was located near the border with Nepal, causing strong tremors that were felt in Kathmandu, approximately 200 kilometers away. Local officials indicated that buildings in Kathmandu swayed, prompting residents to evacuate their homes.

According to Chinese state media, the earthquake led to the collapse of several buildings in Dingri, affecting communities including Changsuo, Quluo, and Cuoguo. Authorities are currently assessing the extent of the damage and conducting rescue operations.

This region is known for its seismic activity due to the tectonic pressures between the Indian and Eurasian plates. A devastating earthquake in 2015 resulted in nearly 9,000 deaths and over 22,000 injuries in Nepal.
