On January 5, 2025, a petition advocating for a nationwide ban on private firework usage in Germany garnered over 1.2 million signatures. This initiative, spearheaded by the German Police Union (GdP), aims to enhance the safety of emergency services during New Year celebrations.
The petition highlights the dangers faced by emergency responders, who often sacrifice their own celebrations to assist others, stating that fireworks are frequently used as weapons against them. The GdP is calling for a comprehensive ban on private firework usage, similar to regulations in several other countries, as well as a halt to the sale of pyrotechnics to non-professionals.
In various regions of Germany, New Year’s Eve celebrations resulted in at least five casualties due to improper handling of fireworks. In Berlin, police apprehended 330 individuals, with 13 officers sustaining serious injuries, one requiring surgery after being struck by a firework.
In Leipzig, approximately 100-150 youths engaged in reckless firework use, targeting vehicles and public transport. Similar incidents were reported in Hamburg, Dresden, and Gelsenkirchen, where emergency personnel faced attacks involving fireworks.
In Schwäbisch Gmünd, three police officers sustained minor injuries from a nearby firework explosion. Chancellor Olaf Scholz has opposed a total ban on fireworks but supports stricter regulations. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser also did not endorse a complete prohibition but suggested potential restrictions in specific cities and communities.
