Yamandu Orsi of the left-wing Broad Front coalition has emerged victorious in Uruguay's presidential run-off election held on November 24, 2024. Orsi secured approximately 49.77% of the votes, defeating Alvaro Delgado from the ruling National Party, who garnered around 45.95%. Voter turnout was reported at nearly 90%.
Current President Luis Lacalle Pou, who is constitutionally barred from seeking immediate re-election, congratulated Orsi on social media, pledging a smooth transition of power. Delgado acknowledged his defeat shortly after the results began to indicate Orsi's lead, calling for unity among Uruguayans.
Orsi's victory marks a return of the Broad Front to power after their 15-year tenure was interrupted by Lacalle Pou's election in 2019. The Broad Front previously held the presidency under leaders such as Jose Mujica and Tabare Vazquez.
In his victory speech, Orsi emphasized the importance of inclusivity, stating, "Let's understand that there is another part of our country who have different feelings today. These people will also have to help build a better country. We need them too." He also pledged to address economic challenges and security concerns, which have been primary issues for voters.
Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva extended his congratulations to Orsi, framing the victory as a win for democracy in Latin America and expressing hopes for continued collaboration between Brazil and Uruguay.
