Russian Drone Attacks in Ukraine and Energy Precautions Amid Threats on November 11, 2024

In Mykolajiw, a southern Ukrainian port city, at least five people were killed and one woman injured due to a Russian drone attack on the night of November 11, 2024. Fires in two residential buildings were extinguished, and several other structures sustained damage. Additionally, five Russian drones were shot down in the Mykolajiw region.

In the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia, one person was killed, and 21 others were injured during Russian bombing attacks. According to Governor Ivan Fedorov, at least three glide bombs struck the city. Ukraine has been resisting the Russian invasion for over two and a half years.

Meanwhile, designated U.S. President Donald Trump discussed a potential 'return of peace' in Europe during a phone call with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Government spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit stated that both leaders agreed to work towards this goal. Scholz emphasized Germany's continued support for Ukraine during the conversation.

Scholz also announced plans for an upcoming discussion with Russian President Vladimir Putin, indicating it would take place 'soon,' although no specific date was provided. He mentioned the need to consult with allies before proceeding.

According to the Washington Post, Trump reminded Putin of the significant U.S. military presence in Europe during their conversation. Both expressed interest in further discussions aimed at resolving the Ukraine conflict, briefly touching on the future territorial arrangement of Ukraine.

During his campaign, Trump claimed he could end the Ukraine war within 24 hours, potentially before his inauguration on January 20. However, he has not specified how this would be achieved and has opposed ongoing U.S. financial support for Ukraine.

Trump's proposed rapid resolution could imply that Ukraine might have to cede some territories to Russia, a demand Moscow has stated as a prerequisite for peace negotiations, which the Kyiv government has firmly rejected.

In response to threats of missile strikes from Russia, Ukraine implemented preventive emergency power outages across more than ten regions on the morning of November 11. Areas affected included Kyiv, Kyiv Oblast, Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, and Donetsk, as directed by the energy company Ukrenergo.

The Kyiv City Military Administration reported that these outages were necessary due to the risk of missile attacks. Additional regions, including Mykolajiw, Cherkasy, Sumy, Zhytomyr, Kirovohrad, and Kharkiv, also experienced power outages.

Prior to the outages, Ukraine's Air Force warned of the takeoff of strategic bombers from the Caspian Sea region and the potential launch of cruise missiles, triggering an air alert across the country. However, monitoring channels later reported that no missile launches were detected despite the maneuvers.

As of 9:00 AM, air alerts had been lifted in most regions of Ukraine, though there has been no official announcement regarding the cancellation of emergency power outages.
