Tunisia's President Kais Saied Set to Win Election Amid Political Tensions

Tunisian President Kais Saied is poised to secure re-election with 89.2 percent of the votes, according to an exit poll released on state television after the election held on October 6, 2024. This outcome is expected to solidify Saied's grip on power following a controversial power consolidation three years ago.

The Independent High Authority for Elections of Tunisia (ISIE) will confirm the official results on Monday evening. Voter turnout was reported at 27.7 percent, lower than anticipated. Saied faced two challengers: former ally Zouhair Maghzaoui, who garnered 3.9 percent of the vote, and Ayachi Zammel, who received 6.9 percent before being jailed last month.

Political opposition has been significantly weakened, as many prominent figures from major political parties have faced imprisonment, including Rached Ghannouchi, leader of the Ennahda party. Rights organizations assert that Saied's presidency has reversed democratic advancements achieved post-2011 Arab Spring.

Despite facing criticism, Saied defends his actions as necessary to combat corruption and protect national interests. The political climate has intensified, especially after the electoral commission disqualified three candidates, leading to protests from opposition and civil society groups.

Additionally, Tunisia is grappling with economic challenges, including high inflation and unemployment, which have fueled public discontent. Recent legislative actions by Saied's supporters have further undermined judicial independence, raising concerns about the future of democracy in Tunisia.
