Brazil's Satellite Initiative Expands Internet Access to Remote Communities

編集者: Veronika Nazarova

A groundbreaking initiative is bringing high-speed internet access to thousands of Brazilians in remote and underserved communities. Telebras, Brazil's state-owned telecommunications company, has partnered with SES, a leading global satellite operator, to implement the Electronic Government program - Citizen Assistance Service (GESAC). This collaboration leverages SES's cutting-edge satellite technology, specifically the high-throughput SES-17 Ka-band satellite, to deliver reliable internet connectivity to over 1,500 sites across Brazil's Northern Region, including public institutions, schools, libraries, telecenters, health units, indigenous villages, and rural settlements.

Frederico Siqueira, President of Telebras, emphasized, "Telebras has a long history of championing digital inclusion, particularly for communities in vulnerable situations. This project is a testament to our commitment to bridging the digital divide and empowering Brazilians with access to details and opportunities." The GESAC program, coordinated by Brazil's Ministry of Communications, aims to promote digital and social inclusion by facilitating e-government initiatives and expanding internet access to underserved populations.

Since its inception in 2002, the program has established over 15,000 free internet points across the country. SES's Managed Enterprise solution, delivered via the SES-17 satellite, provides the necessary bandwidth and reliability to connect these remote locations. This solution includes satellite, gateways, and remote site management, ensuring seamless operation and maintenance.

Omar Trujillo, Vice President of Enterprise Americas at SES, stated, "We are proud to partner with Telebras in this vital initiative. Our satellite technology plays a crucial role in reaching even the most isolated communities, enabling them to participate fully in the digital economy and access essential services." The new gateway in Hortolandia, Brazil, further strengthens SES's commitment to providing reliable connectivity solutions in the region.

The successful implementation of the GESAC program in Brazil's Northern Region demonstrates the transformative power of satellite technology in bridging the digital divide and empowering communities with access to information, education, and economic opportunities.
