Puerto Rico Secures $9.8M for Digital Inclusion

Puerto Rico is making significant strides towards digital inclusion with a $9.8 million grant approved by the U.S. National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA). This funding will enable the Puerto Rico Broadband Program to enhance digital literacy and cybersecurity training for essential sectors of society.

The grant is part of the State Capacity Program for Digital Equity, aiming to equip professionals in critical areas such as health, education, agriculture, and public administration. According to Michelle Cabiya, director of the Puerto Rico Broadband Program, this initiative will empower essential workers like nurses, teachers, and caregivers with fundamental digital skills.

“This milestone ensures that essential workers have the necessary tools to thrive in today’s digital world, promoting inclusion and empowering our workforce,” Cabiya stated.

In addition to benefiting productive sectors, the project includes specific programs for seniors and individuals with disabilities, promoting their integration into the digital economy. Resources will also be allocated to the Puerto Rico Innovation and Technology Service for cybersecurity training for government personnel, addressing online security and privacy challenges.

This initiative is part of Puerto Rico's Digital Equity Plan, which aims to guarantee meaningful access to affordable, high-speed internet. Alan Davidson, Assistant Secretary for Communications and Information, emphasized that all U.S. states and territories, including Puerto Rico, now have digital equity plans to promote widespread use of internet services.

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo highlighted the importance of this investment, stating, “High-quality, high-speed internet enables families and businesses to thrive in our modern economy. This grant provides the necessary tools to maximize that connection, whether for work, education, health, or any other essential service.”

With this funding, Puerto Rico joins the national effort to close the digital divide, ensuring that all residents, regardless of age or condition, have the skills needed to seize the opportunities that connectivity offers.
