The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has unveiled a "Playbook for Public Sector Generative Artificial Intelligence Deployment" aimed at assisting government officials in effectively utilizing AI technologies.
With a new presidential administration on the horizon, the future of federal AI policy remains uncertain. The outgoing administration has initiated several measures to enhance AI governance, including an executive order, an AI Bill of Rights, and draft implementation guidance.
The playbook outlines actionable steps for deploying generative AI (GenAI) across government levels and showcases DHS pilot programs that illustrate practical applications of these principles.
“By sharing our experiences and best practices, we aim to empower other government agencies to leverage AI in a way that enhances their missions while safeguarding the rights and privacy of the individuals they serve,” stated DHS Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer Eric Hysen.
It features three specific GenAI pilot projects: enhancing investigative leads through large language models, aiding local governments in hazard mitigation planning, and creating training opportunities for immigration officers.
The playbook details the steps DHS has taken in developing and implementing AI use cases, including building coalitions, leveraging tools, and ensuring responsible AI usage.
Additionally, it provides a glossary of terms, a template for AI pilot proposals, and a sample metrics dashboard to monitor progress and impact.
“Safely harnessing the potential of GenAI requires collaboration across government, industry, academia, and civil society,” remarked Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas. He encouraged local leaders to engage in fostering a responsible, innovation-focused culture.
This initiative builds on DHS's previous actions, including an AI roadmap and the establishment of a dedicated AI task force.
