Poland's government has announced a significant investment of 1 billion zloty (€232 million) aimed at advancing artificial intelligence (AI) technology, including the creation of a Polish large language model.
On November 15, the defense and digital affairs ministries signed a letter of intent to establish an Artificial Intelligence Fund and an advisory council to oversee the initiative. Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stated, 'Artificial intelligence is indispensable today, both in the economic and security contexts.' He emphasized the importance of using AI safely and responsibly.
Digital Affairs Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski confirmed the funding but did not specify a timeline, promising detailed plans by early 2025. The council will coordinate efforts among various state institutions, including the ministries of digital affairs, education, and defense, as well as the Polish Development Fund and the National Centre for Research and Development.
Kosiniak-Kamysz highlighted that the AI development strategy could provide competitive advantages for Poland, enhancing both security and economic growth. He noted the dual-use potential of AI for civilian and military applications.
Additionally, the Polish state plans to contribute to the development of the Polish Large Language Model (PLLuM), which aims to facilitate AI understanding and usage of the Polish language. This project was initiated last year.
The announcement comes amid growing discussions about the role of AI in Polish media, following a controversial experiment by a public radio station that launched an AI-operated channel.
