Severe Flooding Hits Saudi Arabia - January 9, 2025

Saudi Arabia has experienced significant rainfall, resulting in severe flooding across multiple cities including Mecca, Jeddah, Al-Baha, and Asir. This follows an unusual snowfall earlier in November, marking a dramatic shift in weather patterns attributed to global warming.

Local residents and officials are grappling with the impacts of climate change as daily life is disrupted. Despite the flooding, there have been no reports of casualties or major damages.

In the past six to seven months, the region has witnessed unexpected weather changes, with heavy rainfall occurring in areas previously characterized by arid conditions. The Saudi Arabian Meteorological Department issued a red alert for areas near the Red Sea and announced school closures as heavy rains are expected to persist until January 10.

Four months ago, the Sahara Desert was transformed into a lake due to flooding, highlighting the extreme weather phenomena linked to global warming. Similar effects have been observed in India, particularly in Rajasthan, which is also known for its dry climate. Addressing the adverse effects of climate change is becoming increasingly urgent to prevent further disruption to livelihoods in the future.
