Mysteries of the Ocean: Rare Black Anglerfish Spotted Off the Coast of Tenerife

編集者: Inna Horoshkina One

A rare and unexpected sighting off the coast of Tenerife, Spain, has stunned scientists: a live black anglerfish (Melanocetus johnsonii) was observed near the water’s surface, something never before recorded in this region.

This deep-sea species typically inhabits depths of 200 to 2,000 meters, hidden in the ocean’s darkness. But on January 26, 2025, just two kilometers from San Juan Beach, an exception occurred—raising new questions about life in the deep.

How Was This Rare Creature Discovered?

Marine biologist Laia Valor from the Condric-Tenerife NGO, while participating in a shark research expedition, noticed a black object floating in the water. Initially, it appeared to be plastic debris, but upon closer inspection, she realized it was a live black anglerfish.

This is the first documented case of this species being found in such shallow waters near Tenerife.

The research team observed the animal for several hours, capturing photos and videos of its behavior. Unfortunately, the fish was injured and did not survive long, but the collected data could provide valuable insights into the biology of this mysterious species.

What Is a Black Anglerfish?

This deep-sea predator is known for its eerie yet fascinating appearance:
🔹 A large mouth filled with sharp, inward-curving teeth.
🔹 A special bioluminescent lure on its head, used to attract prey.
🔹 The ability to survive in extreme deep-sea conditions, where it is cold, dark, and under immense pressure.

This species became iconic after appearing in the animated film “Finding Nemo”, where its terrifying look left a lasting impression.

Why Did the Fish Appear Near the Surface?

Scientists are considering several possible explanations for this unusual behavior:
Illness or injury, which could have disoriented the fish.
Strong ocean currents, pushing it out of its natural habitat.
Escape from a predator, possibly an even more mysterious deep-sea creature.

Whatever the reason, this sighting presents a rare opportunity to study this elusive species in an unexpected setting.

The collected photos, videos, and tissue samples will help scientists better understand:
✅ The biology and behavior of the black anglerfish.
✅ Potential changes in deep-sea ecosystems.
✅ How global oceanic shifts may be affecting these creatures. completely unexpected sight so close to the surface. This marked the first documented record of a live anglerfish in such shallow waters off Tenerife.
