La Niña Phenomenon Expected to Emerge This Fall, Impacting Brazil's Climate

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has recently forecasted a 60% chance of the La Niña phenomenon developing between October 2024 and February 2025. This climatic event, characterized by cooler waters in the Equatorial Pacific, is expected to significantly alter weather patterns globally.

As La Niña emerges, northern and northeastern Brazil may experience increased rainfall, while the southern regions could face drought conditions. This pattern mirrors the effects seen from July 2020 to February 2023, when La Niña caused severe flooding in southern Bahia and drought in Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul.

La Niña typically follows the El Niño phenomenon, which warms Pacific waters and leads to extreme droughts in Brazil. The WMO's projections suggest that while La Niña may bring temporary relief through increased precipitation, the ongoing threat of climate change will continue to exacerbate extreme weather events worldwide.
