In a significant move to attract international visitors, China has announced an extension of its visa-free transit policy, allowing eligible foreign travelers to stay for up to 10 days, or 240 hours. This change, effective immediately, marks a shift from the previous limits of 72 to 144 hours.

The policy now applies to travelers from 54 countries, including major nations like the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, Brazil, and Canada. This means that visitors can transit through China to a third destination without the need for a visa, enhancing the convenience of travel for many.

Travelers can take advantage of this policy at 60 designated ports across 24 provinces, with the stipulation that they remain within specified areas during their stay. This initiative is part of China’s broader strategy to revive tourism following the reopening of its borders in 2023 after a three-year closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to this transit extension, China has also expanded visa-free entry to 38 countries, allowing visitors from nations such as Spain, Singapore, and the Netherlands to explore for up to 30 days. This flexibility is a welcome change, especially as the tourism sector begins to rebound.

Recent statistics reveal a surge in inbound travel, with foreigners making 8.2 million trips to China in the third quarter of 2024, a remarkable 48.8% increase from the previous year. Notably, over half of these trips were facilitated by the newly relaxed visa regulations, which saw a staggering year-on-year rise of 78.6%.

As travelers look to explore new horizons, China’s updated visa policy presents a golden opportunity for those eager to experience the rich culture and breathtaking landscapes of this vast nation. Whether you're planning a brief stopover or a longer adventure, the new rules make it easier than ever to add China to your travel itinerary.
