Madrid Integrates AI in Healthcare through European Project ODIN

The Madrid healthcare system has joined the European project ODIN to enhance services and management in hospitals using advanced technologies. This initiative incorporates artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things, and robotics into clinical environments.

A pilot program at Hospital Clínico San Carlos is utilizing robots for transporting medical materials. These modular robotic carts navigate the hospital autonomously, assisting in surgical interventions.

Additionally, high-definition cameras powered by AI are being employed to improve emergency management. They can detect hazardous situations, such as blocked exits during an evacuation, and adjust escape routes accordingly, while also alerting medical staff to immediate assistance needs.

“Madrid’s participation in this project, alongside institutions in France, Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, and Italy, positions our region at the forefront of public health innovation,” stated Miguel López-Valverde, the regional Digitalization Minister.

The initiative is coordinated by MEDTRONIC Ibérica, the LifeStech group at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, and the Activage Association. Furthermore, the Madrid Health Service is already applying AI in early breast cancer detection, dermatology, and prostate cancer screenings.
