AI and Automation Threaten Millions of Jobs by 2030

Advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation are set to significantly impact the job market, with millions of positions at risk of being replaced. A report from McKinsey Global Institute predicts that by 2030, tens of millions of workers in the United States will experience job transitions due to automation.

Six professions are identified as particularly vulnerable to AI and automation:

  • Data Entry Clerks: Approximately 1.6 million data entry jobs may vanish by 2030, with a projected 18% decline in financial, payroll, and information clerks by 2032.

  • Retail Workers: The rise of online shopping and automation could lead to a loss of 830,000 retail jobs in the U.S. by 2030, with a 2.2% decline anticipated by 2032.

  • Administrative Assistants: An estimated 710,000 administrative assistant positions may be eliminated by 2030, with a potential 22% decrease in the legal sector by 2032.

  • Cashiers: The implementation of self-checkout machines could result in a reduction of 630,000 cashier jobs by 2030, with a projected loss of 348,100 jobs by 2032.

  • Manufacturing Workers: Automation could affect 36% of hours worked in manufacturing by 2030, with a 9.3% decline predicted over the next decade.

  • Food Service Workers: The food service industry may see a 4.8% decline by 2032 due to the predictability of physical tasks that can be automated.

As AI technology advances, jobs that are repetitive and administrative are at the highest risk of being replaced. Workers in these sectors are encouraged to consider upskilling or transitioning to less vulnerable careers.
