China's Xuelong-2 Icebreaker Launches 41st Antarctic Expedition to Study Marine Ecosystems

The Chinese research icebreaker Xuelong-2, also known as Snow Dragon-2, has commenced its month-long mission in the Amundsen Sea as part of the 41st Antarctic expedition. This significant journey aims to enhance our understanding of polar marine ecosystems.

Led by Captain Luo Guangfu, the expedition focuses on a survey area primarily located south of 68 degrees latitude. The team will investigate various aspects of Antarctic marine hydrology, meteorology, chemistry, biology, and geology.

During the mission, researchers will collect polar seawater, sediment, gas, and biological samples, which will be analyzed in the onboard laboratory. This data is crucial for monitoring annual changes in polar marine ecological parameters, aiding in the protection of these fragile environments.

Organized by China's Ministry of Natural Resources, the expedition also aims to study the impacts of climate change on Antarctic ecosystems and promote international scientific cooperation.
