Breakthrough Discovery of Nine Novel Cyanobacterial Species in India Highlights Urgent Need for Biodiversity Conservation

In a significant scientific breakthrough, researchers from the Department of Botany at Banaras Hindu University have identified nine novel species of cyanobacteria from various regions of India. This discovery not only enriches the understanding of microbial diversity but also underscores the urgent need for biodiversity conservation amid escalating climate change.

Conducted in ecologically significant regions, the study revealed seven new cyanobacterial species in the biodiversity hotspots of Northeast India, specifically in Tripura, Nagaland, and Assam. The remaining two species were found in the Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO-recognized site in Madhya Pradesh known for its unique ecosystems. This finding marks a significant addition to India's microbial diversity and is particularly relevant against the backdrop of global biodiversity loss driven by climate change and habitat destruction.

Among the 13 authors of the study, seven were internship and dissertation students who contributed significantly to the research. Senior research fellow Sagarika Pal praised the students' dedication, stating, 'This discovery was possible only through the collective effort and unrelenting curiosity of our team.' The inclusion of young researchers brought fresh perspectives and energy to the project.

As climate change accelerates biodiversity loss, such studies serve as both a beacon of hope and a call to action. They highlight the critical importance of preserving lesser-known life forms that play indispensable roles in maintaining the balance of our planet's ecosystems. The work received financial support from grants by SERB and BHU and was published in the journal of phycology, 'Algal Research.'
