WWF and AVIF Collaborate to Promote Biodiversity in Sicily

On November 24, 2024, over 80 participants gathered in Caltanissetta, Sicily, for the eco-walk event "Alberi & biodiversità," organized by WWF Sicilia Centrale and the Association of Forest Nurserymen (AVIF). This initiative aimed to raise awareness about local biodiversity and the importance of native flora.

Led by environmental experts, participants explored the rich biodiversity of Sicilian forests, learning about reforestation, soil protection, and climate change adaptation. Special emphasis was placed on the conservation of the native black bee and the significance of preserving forest biodiversity.

As part of the event, participants planted dozens of Sorbus domestica saplings near a newly created artificial lake, which will serve as a natural habitat for various species. This lake is set to become a wildlife observation site, enhancing the ecological network in the region.

Each participant received a Sorbus domestica sapling, recognized as the tree of 2024 in Europe. This species symbolizes resilience, living up to 200 years and providing ecological benefits through its flowers and fruits.

Ennio Bonfanti, president of WWF Sicilia Centrale, stated that this collaboration with AVIF will continue with new initiatives aimed at educating the public about nature conservation and fostering a deeper connection with the environment.
