Global Highlights: AMD Advances in AI Processors and Dexcom's Mixed Earnings Report

October 24, 2024 - AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) unveiled its latest EPYC 9005 Series processors, marking a significant advancement in data center technology. The new processors, known internally as 'Turin', are designed to enhance cloud server performance and artificial intelligence applications. With 150 billion transistors and 192 cores, these chips promise speeds exceeding 5 GHz, representing a substantial leap in efficiency and capability.

AMD's EPYC processors are compatible with the SP5 'Genoa' platform and are expected to support various widely-used services, including WhatsApp, Facebook, and Netflix. The company claims that just 131 servers equipped with the new processors can perform equivalently to 1,000 older servers from competitors, achieving an 83.9% reduction in physical space and over 50% energy savings.

In related developments, AMD is set to launch the MI325x and MI350 accelerators in late 2025, which are aimed at significantly boosting artificial intelligence workloads in data centers.

Meanwhile, in the medical technology sector, Dexcom reported third-quarter revenues of $994.2 million, surpassing Wall Street expectations of $990.7 million. Despite this positive news, the company reiterated its full-year sales forecast of approximately $4 billion, leading to a nearly 16% decline in its share price after the announcement. Dexcom has faced challenges this year, with shares down 40% and a restructuring of its sales team impacting customer numbers and revenue per customer.

Dexcom's Chief Commercial Officer, Teri Lawver, is set to retire at the end of the year, adding to the company's leadership changes amid ongoing financial pressures.
