Microsoft has begun testing a new AI-powered search feature in Windows, enhancing the way users can locate files on their devices. This innovative tool allows for more casual language searches, moving beyond traditional keyword reliance.

Initially announced in October 2024, this feature leverages semantic indexing, enabling users to search for documents and files locally on their PCs without needing an internet connection. It operates using the Neural Processing Unit (NPU) found in devices equipped with Copilot Plus.

Currently, the AI search is limited to Windows settings and supports file formats such as JPEG, PNG, PDF, TXT, and XLS. Users can customize the indexed locations through the Privacy & Security settings. Furthermore, Microsoft plans to expand this feature to include cloud data from OneDrive in the future.

The AI search is being tested on Copilot+ PCs powered by Snapdragon processors, with support for Intel and AMD devices expected later. Initially available in English, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish, the rollout's broader availability and support for additional languages remain to be announced.
