During the AI Action Summit in Paris, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted India’s commitment to artificial intelligence and its potential to drive global progress. Expressing gratitude to French President Emmanuel Macron for co-hosting the event, he emphasized that AI can play a transformative role in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by accelerating advancements in healthcare, education, and agriculture.
PM Modi called for a collaborative global effort to harness AI’s potential responsibly. He stressed the importance of open-source AI systems that promote transparency and trust, as well as the need to develop quality datasets free from biases. He also underscored the significance of democratizing AI and ensuring that its applications remain people-centric. Additionally, he addressed the rising threats posed by cybersecurity challenges, disinformation, and deepfakes, calling for international cooperation to mitigate these risks.
Discussing the impact of AI on employment, PM Modi acknowledged concerns about job displacement but argued that technology historically reshapes work rather than eliminating it. He emphasized the importance of upskilling and reskilling the workforce to prepare for an AI-driven future. He also highlighted the unique role of the Global South in shaping AI governance and ensuring that technology remains inclusive and beneficial for all.
PM Modi announced that India is actively developing its own Large Language Model to reflect the country’s linguistic and cultural diversity. He outlined India’s public-private partnership model, which provides affordable computing power to startups and researchers. Reaffirming India’s commitment to using AI for the greater good, he stated, "The future of AI must be shaped by human responsibility, ensuring it serves humanity rather than replacing it."
