Oracle to Invest $6.5 Billion in AI Cloud in Malaysia

Oracle, a U.S.-based software giant, plans to invest over $6.5 billion to establish a public cloud region in Malaysia, responding to the increasing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud services in the country.

The new cloud region will expand Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) in the Asia-Pacific to a total of 12 public cloud regions. It will offer over 150 infrastructure and software as a service (SaaS) options, aimed at enhancing Malaysia's digital economy and fostering AI-driven innovation.

Franco Chiam, vice president for cloud and digital infrastructure at IDC, highlighted the necessity for more data centers to support the growing demand for AI services, which require substantial data storage and computational power.

Oracle emphasized that the new cloud region would enable Malaysian organizations to modernize applications, migrate workloads to the cloud, and leverage data analytics and AI. Customers will have access to OCI's generative AI capabilities, including retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) services and the OCI Super cluster, the largest AI supercomputer in the cloud.

Garrett Ilg, Oracle's Executive Vice President for Japan and Asia Pacific, stated that Malaysia presents unique growth opportunities for businesses aiming to adopt the latest digital technologies, reinforcing Oracle's commitment to the country as a regional hub for cloud infrastructure.
