Recent excavations in Sevastopol have uncovered rare burials believed to belong to Roman legionaries, according to Mikhail Matrosov, deputy head of the Chersonesus suburban expedition from the Institute of Archaeology of Crimea. The findings were reported on November 6, 2024.
The excavation site is located in the southern suburb of ancient Chersonesus, where the burials date back to the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. During this period, units from the Italic and Claudian legions were stationed in Chersonesus.
In addition to the burials, archaeologists discovered cremation graves contained within pottery vases and amphorae. Other significant artifacts include red lacquered lamps, glass balsamaria, a silver brooch depicting Aphrodite Urania, a Roman buckle, and various other items.
