ISLAMABAD - Pakistan has launched its first fully indigenous Electro-Optical (EO-1) Satellite, developed by the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), on January 20, 2025, at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre (JSLC) in China.

This satellite is expected to enhance capabilities in agriculture, disaster management, and environmental monitoring, marking a significant milestone in Pakistan's space science journey.

EO-1 is equipped with advanced imaging technology, promising substantial benefits across various sectors. Zain Bukhari, a SUPARCO expert, stated, "This is a historic milestone for Pakistan." The satellite features a high-resolution camera for detailed Earth imaging, showcasing the nation’s self-reliance in space technology.

Bukhari noted that EO-1 will revolutionize agricultural practices by providing data on crop suitability and water requirements, ultimately minimizing resource wastage. The satellite will also be crucial during disasters, delivering real-time data for effective relief operations.

Furthermore, EO-1 aims to address climate change by monitoring environmental changes such as deforestation and glacier melting. Aisha Rabia, another SUPARCO expert, emphasized its potential applications in urban development and resource extraction.

SUPARCO has ambitious plans for future deep space missions and scientific research, aiming to strengthen Pakistan’s position in the global space arena. The launch of EO-1 symbolizes the country’s commitment to advancing space technology for national progress.
