Rescue Farm in France Aims to Help Abandoned Animals

Estelle Almy has opened a small farm in Grenade-sur-l'Adour, France, dedicated to rescuing abandoned animals and those saved from slaughter. Since February 2024, the farm has become home to around thirty animals, including chickens, ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs, goats, and horses.

Each morning, Estelle ensures that the animals are warm and comfortable, particularly the small creatures that are sheltered from the night chill. The rabbits roam freely, while the guinea pigs are kept in a spacious enclosure that is moved regularly to provide fresh grazing.

Among the rescued animals are five ferrets, brought to the farm because their owners could no longer care for them. Estelle emphasizes the need for understanding these often-misunderstood pets, stating they require space and interaction, much like dogs and cats.

Notably, Estelle has saved a total of 71 horses, including Aventure, the first horse she rescued in 2012. Her previous refuge in the Basque Country had to close due to high veterinary costs, prompting her to limit the number of animals at her new location to ensure sustainability.

Financial challenges arose recently when Storm Kirk damaged the horse barn's roof, leading Estelle to launch a fundraising campaign that successfully raised €1,800 for repairs. The farm operates primarily on donations and collaborates with centers for individuals with disabilities, using animal-assisted therapy to foster connections and improve well-being.

Estelle's mission focuses on the welfare of both animals and humans, ensuring that potential adopters understand the commitment involved in caring for a rescued animal.
