Starting September, 103 primary schools in Barnet will prohibit smartphones, with 23 secondary schools aiming for complete smartphone removal by 2025. This initiative, supported by Smartphone Free Childhood (SFC), school leaders, Barnet Public Health, and MP Dan Tomlinson, impacts over 63,000 students. New Year 7 students will be smartphone-free up to Year 11. SFC cites a correlation between smartphone/social media use and increased depression, anxiety, and self-harm in young children. The goal is to promote play-based childhoods away from screens. Mr. Tomlinson emphasizes smartphones as distractions and risks to mental health. The Mayor of London's office will monitor the policy's effects. Barnet Education and Learning Services supports the schools-led initiative, sending letters to parents. Research suggests 11-15 year olds are most vulnerable to negative influences from smartphones. Anne Clarke, Labour London Assembly member, supports restricting inappropriate content access.
