Kenya Proposes UN Transition for Haiti Security Mission Amid Rising Violence

On November 13, 2024, President William Ruto of Kenya proposed transitioning the Kenya-led security mission in Haiti into a United Nations peacekeeping operation. This recommendation follows concerns regarding the mission's effectiveness and sustainability in addressing escalating gang violence in Haiti.

During a phone call with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, Ruto stated that a UN operation would enhance the mission's ability to tackle the ongoing violence. A recent UN report indicated that violence in Haiti has intensified, with a 22% increase in internally displaced persons reported between August and October.

Salvador, one of the countries participating in the mission, criticized it as 'critically under-resourced,' highlighting a lack of adequate manpower and equipment. Transitioning to a UN operation is viewed as a means to secure the mission's future, particularly as uncertainties loom over continued funding from the incoming Trump administration.
