On December 8, 2024, unknown gunmen stormed the Iranian embassy in Damascus, Syria, following significant territorial gains by Syrian rebels. The incident occurred as the Iran-allied government of Bashar al-Assad faced serious challenges from rebel forces, particularly Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which has been leading advances across western Syria.

Iranian state media reported that the assailants not only invaded the embassy but also targeted nearby stores. Footage circulated by various media outlets showed individuals inside the embassy rummaging through furniture and documents, causing damage to the premises. However, the authenticity of these videos could not be independently verified.

In response to the escalating situation, Iran announced the evacuation of embassy families but denied claims regarding the withdrawal of military personnel. Iranian ambassador to Syria, Hossein Akbari, confirmed that the embassy remained operational with several diplomats present and was engaged in high-level discussions concerning the ongoing crisis.

HTS, which has assured the safety of significant religious sites in the area, was previously affiliated with al-Qaeda before rebranding in 2016. The Sayeda Zeinab shrine, a revered site for Shi'ites, has historically attracted pilgrims and militia members alike.
