NATO to Hold Urgent Meeting on Ukraine Amid Escalating Conflict with Russia

On November 22, 2024, NATO spokesperson Mark Rutte announced an urgent meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council scheduled for next week. This follows Russia's recent use of a new medium-range ballistic missile in an attack on the Ukrainian city of Dnipro, which is viewed as a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict.

The NATO meeting, called at Ukraine's request, will take place in Brussels on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, and will focus on the implications of Russia's missile strike.

In a related incident, regional authorities in Sumy, northeastern Ukraine, reported that a Russian drone attack killed two people and injured twelve others on the morning of November 22. The attack damaged several residential buildings and infrastructure, continuing a pattern of deadly assaults in the region.

Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry stated that its air defense systems intercepted and shot down 23 Ukrainian drones over three Russian regions, claiming that these drones were part of an attempted attack on Russian territory.

Additionally, a senior South Korean official revealed that Russia has supplied North Korea with anti-aircraft missiles in exchange for sending North Korean troops to support its military operations in Ukraine. The U.S. and South Korea have expressed concerns over the potential transfer of sensitive nuclear and missile technology from Russia to North Korea.

In a historical context, Ukraine continues to seek recognition of the Holodomor, the man-made famine of 1932-1933, as genocide. The European Parliament and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe have both recognized it as such, citing the ongoing aggression from Russia as a tragic reminder of past attempts to undermine Ukrainian sovereignty.
